A £15 million redevelopment of the De Gruchy building to create a new Next store has been given the go-ahead by Planning.
Next say that they plan to create jobs in the Island on the back of the redevelopment, which is due to be complete by 2017, and which will see them selling furniture in Jersey for the first time.
De Gruchy say that the investment will be the biggest in Jersey’s high street in decades.
Planning Director Peter Le Gresley said that the redevelopment would be good for the town.
He said: “The application was approved on Monday night. We wanted to get it out quickly because it is obviously an important economic generator, and we are well within the target on the application.
“There was a previous Planning consent on the site already for a larger building but this is a really good boost for the town centre and retail in particular.”
In January, De Gruchy announced their plans to revamp the site, creating “a state-of-the-art shopping experience” and more than doubling its retail offering.
De Gruchy Managing Director Neville Moore said it was an exciting time for the store that was founded in 1810 and today employs more than 200 people.
