A 33-year-old man who held a large bread knife to his wife’s throat and threatened to kill her has been sent to prison for two years for grave and criminal assault.
Witold Krolikowski told the court he was angry with his wife, Kinga, because she had returned home late to their flat in St John’s Road. He’d told her to be back by 22:00, but she’d stayed out until 23:00.
Krolikowski was also angry because he couldn’t find the mobile phone he’d bought her as a birthday present. He wanted to check it because he thought she might be seeing other men, and because he believed she had rung up a huge bill.
Krolikowski told the police he was an alcoholic and had drunk 16 cans of special brew on the evening of the attack, and that he was drunk.
When initially interviewed by the police he denied threatening his wife with a knife, instead claiming the knife was by the bed because he’d been using it to self-harm. There was evidence he’d slashed his arms.
He did though admit to grabbing his wife by the throat and to shaking her.
Sentencing him, the Bailiff, William Bailhache, said: “There is no excuse for your conduct." He went on to say Mrs Krolikowska had been violated twice: once by a person she had trusted, and in her own home.
