Ice cream dreams for jewellery shop

From carats to salted caramel... plans have gone in to transform an ex-jewellery shop on Gorey Pier into an ice cream parlour in the hope of bringing new ‘flavours’ to the popular tourist spot.

Aiming to sprinkle some “vitality” in the area, the application concerns the old Jewellery Warehouse.

The application, which is currently before the Planning Department, claims that this change of use is likely to ‘scoop’ the interest of visitors frequenting the area during the summer months.

In a covering letter detailing the plans, the applicant states: “There are considerable merits to these proposals as the introduction of a café/ice cream parlour is likely to add vitality to the area where visitors and residents are likely to spend time.”

The letter continues: “During the summer months, Gorey pier is a regular stop for the local tour operators, if approved, this facility would give added choice to these short stay visitors.”

The plans emphasise their compliance with new disability legislation, which obliges business owners to make their premises accessible to everyone regardless of ability.

This is reflected in the installation of “reduced height sections” of the counters, an accessible toilet and a removable ramp that can allow wheelchair users to enter and exit the building.

It’s proposed to be open 07:00 until 20:00, seven days a week.

The application will be considered by the department before permission is granted or denied.
