Spitfire flight experiences to be offered from Jersey for first time

Sunday 19 May 2024

Flying high above Jersey in a two-seater Spitfire sounds like a priceless experience – but for £3,500, islanders will soon be able to strap into the rear cockpit of one of the iconic Second World War fighter planes.

For the first time, Spitfires.com, which usually operates out of the Goodwood Aerodrome in West Sussex, is bringing its operation to the Channel Islands.

Coinciding with worldwide celebrations of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the rides will be on offer from 8 to 14 June.

The organisation said that subject to demand, they hoped to base one of their Spitfires at Jersey Airport every year.

A statement from the company said: “This will be the first time ever that Spitfire flight experiences have been offered from Jersey and we are extremely excited about working with the Crown Dependency to bring our iconic aircraft to this picturesque island that is steeped in so much history.”

A hand-picked cadre of pilots will command the Spitfire from the front seat, with passengers strapped into the rear in their own cockpit, which is kitted out with a full set of controls.

There will even be the opportunity for islanders to take the controls and fly this legendary aircraft for a short time themselves.

Matt Jones, founder and managing director of Spitfires.com said: “We’ve wanted to offer Spitfire flights in Jersey for many years. With three two-seater Spitfires in our fleet, we are in a position to offer more flights in more locations than we ever have before.

“While flying a Spitfire anywhere is a privilege, taking off from Jersey Airport and heading towards the ruggedly beautiful coastline and turquoise water and on to sights such as Gorey Castle promises to be truly mesmerising.

“Even during the shortest of flights we offer, we will be able to circumnavigate the entire Island, which is incredibly special for Jersey residents who come to fly with us.”

Set up in 2010, Spitfires.com has become a leading company in the Spitfire world.

There are an estimated 60 airworthy Spitfires remaining out of the more than 21,000 built and only seven two-seaters.

You can fid more information online or by calling Spitfires.com HQ on 01243 531147.

A 30-minute flights cost £3,500 and 45-minute flights cost £5,000.
