The Fire Service have issued a warning about unattended naked flames as they believe an incense burner caused a flat fire in Westmount Road on Sunday, destroying a bedroom and killing a hamster.
The residents of the flat weren't in at the time but their pet rodent died from the smoke.
When the Fire Service arrived on the scene, they could see smoke coming out of a rear window. Nine firefighters were able to quickly control the fire using a hose reel.
The Service believe that the fire was caused by an unattended incense burner which set alight to newspapers and magazines before spreading to bedroom furniture. The closed bedroom door prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the flat but there was still smoke damage to other rooms.
The heat from the fire reached such high temperatures that it cracked the bedroom window and caused some of the ceiling plasterboard to fail.
After the incident, Crew Commander Andy Gallie said: “Jersey Fire and Rescue would like to remind the public about ensuring all candles, tea lights, incense burners, or other similar items with a naked flame, are properly extinguished prior to leaving the premises or going to bed.
“It can take mere seconds for a flame to set light to nearby household items, with potentially devastating results.”
