Jersey-born musician unveils new song at London venue

Friday 24 February 2023

Harrison Mayo's new single 'La La La' was made BBC Introducing’s track of the week and has also been receiving airtime on the Capital Xtra radio network.

The 25-year-old performed the song at a packed launch event at Sketch in Mayfair, London.

Mr Mayo left the Island at the age of 12 to attend a performing arts school in the UK, where he studied for four years before moving to London.

He currently works multiple jobs  including as a brand ambassador for Facebook technology company Meta, and as a host in a premium suite at the O2 – while he pursues his music career.

However, the 25-year-old artist explained that he is often inspired while working and doesn't want to become "anchored down" by a nine-to-five job, so he can continue to focus on creating music.

Mr Mayo started making La La La, which he describes as "alternative R’n’B and pop", in October when he discovered a sample with a piano melody he liked.

As well as featuring as BBC Introducing’s track of the week, the tune has also been receiving airtime on the Capital Xtra radio network.

"The original sample came from an Apple loop, which is normally frowned upon, because those sounds are so accessible compared to sample or loop packs that people pay money for – as you have to really dig and less people have used them before – but I've only just started to get more hands-on with the production of the music myself which is exciting," he said.

"I sung it three times before at one of the showcases at Boxpark, just to gage the reaction before it was released. People were loving it, so I knew it was going to be good and at Sketch everyone knew the words because they had already downloaded it. When they were singing it back to me I was like: 'This is just nuts!'," he added.

He described the launch party as "very overwhelming in the best possible way".

"Even my old singing teacher from the school I went to in England came. It was a beautiful, blissful experience and I’d never felt so comfortable on stage. I was still nervous but I just felt so confident and at peace, because it really clicked for me when I was on the stage and I was looking at everyone there.

"Friends had brought friends who I had never met and now they are supporters, so it killed all doubts and the reception was crazy – this is what I am meant to be doing."

Commenting on how his career was progressing, the artist said the launch party represented a step-up from his previous performances which had mostly taken place in pubs and other small venues.

"As long as I am consistent, ride the wave nicely and keep releasing good music then everything will go smoothly – and I can’t see it stopping anytime soon," he added.

"I would love to be able to perform in Jersey this year."
