Pilot scheme set to export recycled building material to UK

Thursday 14 December 2023

A local firm which recycles building waste by transforming it into usable stone and sand is set to launch a pilot project to export over 2,000 tonnes of the recycled product to the UK for the first time.

Owner of AAL Recycling Limited, Alan Langlois explained that the pilot scheme hopes to "set up a sustainable market for our products and in turn reduce the need to landfill inert waste".

Over the past 17 years, AAL Recycling Limited have been operating from La Collette and in that time, have recycled a total of 1,419,351 tonnes into aggregate products such as stone, sands, gravel and soil.

But they now want to "develop better opportunities beyond our shores" by exporting 2,200 tonnes of recycled aggregate to the UK in what is believed to be a first for the island.

It comes as Jersey's land reclamation site at La Collette is reaching capacity for non-hazardous waste, leaving companies with "difficult decisions" to make.

The aim of AAL Recycling's newly-launched pilot project, according to the company, is to reuse and recycle as much of the waste they receive from the building industry as possible.

In this new pilot project, AAL plan on using the same ship that imports sand to Jersey on its return journey to minimise costs and the carbon footprint of the transport.

Mr Langlois explained: "The island is facing some difficult decisions and we all need to think differently about our waste and how it can be reused rather that it becoming a waste.

"I care about our island and want to leave the environment in a better position for our children and the future.

"Hopefully if this pilot is successful we can develop better opportunities beyond our shores and set up a sustainable market for our products and in turn reduce the need to landfill inert waste."
