Jersey doctor "honoured" by prestigious award

Wednesday 26 June 2019

A Jersey doctor, who dedicates much of his time to charity work, has been “honoured” with a prestigious fellowship in recognition of his significant contribution to medicine and the wider community.

Local GP Dr Michael Bellamy was awarded the fellowship – an esteemed medical award – by his professional body earlier this year.

The doctor, who also acts as Director on the Board of charity Macmillan Jersey, is a senior partner at his practice – Health Plus – and has looked after patients for over three decades, specialising in musculoskeletal services.

Of his award, the GP said: “It has been a great privilege to serve the Jersey community and I continue to enjoy my work enormously. I am constantly humbled by the passion and commitment of the Macmillan Jersey volunteers."

He continued: “I have felt most honoured to have been nominated for a Fellowship of The Royal College of GPs and proud that my daughter Zosia achieved membership in the same year.”

Throughout his career, Dr Bellamy has represented his fellow Jersey GP’s politically and is the longest serving medical member of the Mental Health Tribunal.

The Royal College of General Practice acknowledged these accomplishments at their Spring General Meeting earlier this year by awarding Dr Bellamy with the fellowship.

Describing Dr Bellamy, the seconder to his proposal said: “despite entering the latter part of his career, [he] still enthusiastically looks after his patients and works with great compassion and dedication to all.”

They added that he is known to “frequently go 'beyond the call of duty', visiting [patients] at home, in hospital and the local hospice if they are in need.”

Lauren Perchard-Rees, Chief Executive Officer of Macmillan Jersey added: “The board of Macmillan Jersey, and myself, are truly grateful for the time Dr Bellamy volunteers to the charity as a committed Director and GP representative.

“It is such a pleasure to work alongside Dr Bellamy and he always prioritises one of our key team values which is putting the person using our services at the core of all we do.”
