Jurat Mike Liston is to step down from his position in the Royal Court as a Jurat for "personal reasons."
He was appointed as a member of the judiciary on 23 January 2012.
Jurats decide the sentence, fine or other sanction given in all criminal, civil and mixed cases, unless a jury has given a verdict.
An official statement said; "...the Bailiff’s view is that Jurat Liston’s decision demonstrates the integrity for which he is well known in Jersey."
It adds, “...the Bailiff, Deputy Bailiff and all Jurat Liston’s colleagues are sad that this has come about and would like to thank him for his service to the Island in this capacity since 2012. We wish him well for the future.”
To stand for Jurat you have to be a British citizen over 40 years old, and either be Jersey born or have lived in the island for the past five years before appointment.
Members of the Electoral College, consisting of the Bailiff, Jurats, Parish Constables, elected States members and members of the Jersey Bar will nominate and appoint a person for the position of Jurat.
Jurat Liston’s position will be filled in the New Year.
