Librarians are sharing their love of reading this weekend with a novel way of celebrating World Book Night.
They will out on the Island's streets marking UNESCO International day of the book and Shakespeare’s birthday and giving away over a dozen different titles.
They are joining a network of volunteer reading enthusiasts and institutions around the UK when 250,000 books of 20 specially printed World Book Night titles will be given out.
The library team will also be helping out a local charity, handing out a range of genres including crime, poetry, non-fiction, Quick Reads, fantasy, historical and contemporary fiction, and fiction in translation to Islanders at the Grace Trust meeting at St Paul's Church on Saturday.
The Grace Trust General Manager Gerry Padden said: “Grace Trust are delighted to have been chosen by our friends at the Jersey Library to receive some free books as a result of World Book Night!
"For many of the folks we work alongside this is a wonderful gesture as many of them would be unable to afford 'to buy a new book', so will look upon this as a treat which will no doubt put a smile on their faces!! A big thank you to the Jersey Library from all at Grace Trust!”
Jersey Library supports mental health in the Island with specially designed collections of Mood Boosting books and Book Prescription Scheme titles and will be giving away more books after World Book Night. Representatives from Mind Jersey will be handing out free copies of Matt Haig’s Reasons to Stay Alive at the Jersey Boat Show from Saturday 30 April until Monday 2 May.
Mind Jersey's Executive Director James Le Feuvre said: “We are delighted to support this initiative. One of our key priorities this year is to tackle stigma, not least through the provision of more information so as to increase understanding about mental illness and promote good mental health for all."
Jersey Library's Senior Librarian Judith Baker said: “The essence of World Book Night is to spread the joy of reading to those who don’t necessarily read regularly for pleasure, so we are delighted to be working in partnership with two local charities to help us reach out to the Jersey community.”
World Book Night began in 2011 and since then a group of 56,000 volunteers have given away books to over 2.25 million people.
