Jersey next step on coast trotter's record-breaking journey

Tuesday 13 July 2021

A champion on her way to becoming the first woman to walk the entirety of the British Isles and Ireland will be arriving in Jersey tomorrow, as part of her bid to raise £100,000 for dementia research.

Karen Penny has already raised more than £87,000, and has so far walked 9,400 miles of the coast of Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland, as well as 100 islands.

She began her journey in attempt to raise awareness for the need to research Alzheimer’s and Dementia, having lost both her husband’s parents, Alma and Kingsley, to the disease.

Karen explained on her fundraising page for Alzheimer’s Research UK: “Dementia has had a profound impact upon our family. During the last 10 years we have lost two very dear family members.

“Alma who succumbed to the effects of vascular dementia in a matter of months, and Kingsley, who  deteriorated to such an extent both mentally and physically that ultimately he couldn't even recognise family members.”

Karen has already ticked off a portion of her Channel Island adventure, having done the rounds in Guernsey, Alderney and Herm.

Whilst in Alderney, she was also supported by a number of local charities, including Milly’s Foundation, Alderney Mind and Alderney Age Concern.

She is currently racking up the miles in Sark, as she prepares to fly over to Jersey, where she will be seeing sights from St. Catherine to Le Braye from Wednesday to Monday.

Ahead of her Channel Island journey, Karen said: “During my journey, I have met incredible people and have gained the most unique insight into daily life from all four corners of Britain and Ireland.

“I have walked with so many people from many different communities and the Channel Island’s looks to be one of the most interesting, I can’t wait to meet the island’s and hear their stories.”

She will be finishing her walk in Shetland in the autumn of this year, which will earn her the title of the first woman to walk the entire coast of Britain and Ireland.
