Jersey Post celebrates 60s with colourful stamps

Saturday 27 January 2018

Six stamps and a miniature sheet celebrating the 1960s, the decade of Jersey tourism hey-day, and its pop culture have just been issued by Jersey Post.

The second of a five-part series this issue explores different aspects of 1960s culture, namely language, music, fashion, events, food and leisure pursuits.

In 1960s, Jersey tourism was in its hey-day; accommodation and travel were affordable and duty free goods highly sought.

The concepts and designs have been created by Hat-Trick Design (London) Ltd, working with specially commissioned illustrators. The Miniature Sheet accompanying the stamps is illustrated by award winning illustrator and designer, Malcolm English, and represents a playful interpretation of Jersey’s main shopping area, incorporating King Street and Queen Street. Bright, clashing colours, typical of 1960s décor are prominent, with lively hues of red, orange, purple and pink decorating the shop-fronts.

Melanie Gouzinis, Head of Philatelic at Jersey Post, said: “This set of stamps really captures the mood of the era. “As with the previous issue celebrating the 1950s, we have been lucky enough to work with award winning illustrators who all present recognisable styles, synonymous with the decade.”

Jersey Post’s 'Popular Culture – The 1960s' stamps are available  from all branches of Jersey Post.

The previous Popular Culture issue, depicting the 1950s, was released on 5 July 2016 and is still available to collectors.
