Jersey set to host landmark women's cricket event

Sunday 05 February 2023

Jersey has been chosen as the host nation for the first ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup European Division 2 qualifier.

Thanks to an expansion of the qualifying process, six teams have been offered the opportunity to battle it out for promotion into Division 1 and ultimately a place at the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024.

The tournament is to be held from 27 May until 3 June and will see Jersey, the hosts, take on their counterparts from Germany, France, Sweden, Italy and Turkey in a single round robin format. The top two teams will be promoted to European Division 1 in Spain in September against the Netherlands and Scotland.

Female cricket in Jersey has been on the up over the past three years following the appointments of a full-time Women’s Head Coach in 2020, and a dedicated Performance and Development Officer for girls and women's cricket in 2022.

Jersey Cricket will also have its first female Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Gomersall, starting her post in February at a time when both the men’s and women’s national teams will be chasing further success.

On hosting the event, Sarah Gomersall stated: “It’s brilliant that one of my first tasks as CEO is to announce that we are hosting the ICC Womens T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in May.  What a year ahead for Jersey Cricket.

“Our focus in the short term is to increase the visibility of the female game in Jersey and having 15 games of international cricket will do just that.

“We hope to see great support from the local community throughout the week to get behind our girls."
