Jersey shooter on target for a medal

Thursday 12 April 2018

Jersey is the closet it’s been in the 2018 Commonwealth Games to getting a medal, after one of the island’s fullbore shooters goes into their final day of competition just outside medal position.

Barry Le Cheminant has moved up from 6th place after the first day of the Queens Prize Individual Final to now sit 4th, with one more day of shooting to go.

Le Cheminant scored a total of 254 and 32 v-bulls after shooting over 300, 500 and 600 yard distances, the same score as England’s Parag Patel who is currently sitting in bronze position and only one point behind England’s David Luckman in silver.

Jersey’s David Le Quesne has moved up seven positions to 11th place in the fullbore shooting event with a score of 252 and 31 v-bulls, ahead of Guernsey brothers Peter and Adam Jory who are currently 13th and 16th respectively.

Le Cheminant and Le Quesne will shoot over 900 and 1000 yard distances in the final round on Saturday in their bid for medal success, which Jersey last won in 1990 by Colin Mallett in the fullbore rifle competition.

Elsewhere in shooting, Sarah Campion finished 15th out of 20 in the 50m Rifle Prone final, with a score of 603.5.

Seasoned Jersey Commonwealth Games thrower Zane Duquemin has secured a place in the discus final, after his second throw scored him a distance of 57.66. The only British athlete in the competition finished 9th out of the top 12 who qualified to the next round. This is the third time Duquemin has made a Commonwealth Games Discus final, he commented on Twitter that he felt rusty but is now resting up for his next throw tomorrow.

In mountain biking, Jersey’s Rhys Hidrio was the second Channel Islander to finish in the men’s cross country behind Guernsey’s James Roe. Hidrio clocked a time of 1:27:42 putting him in 14th place, 10 minutes and six seconds behind the winner. Fellow Jersey cyclist Oliver Lowthorpe finished in 21st place.

Men’s double Matthew Bignell and Alexander Hutchings are the island’s last hope in the Badminton event as they make it through the final 16. They play against Sri Lanka today after beating Uganda 2-0 in the first round.

Both the island’s women badminton players are now out of the games after mixed double Elise Dixon and Alex Hutchings lost their match 10-21 and 11-21 to Sri Lanka.
