Jersey shows appreciation for Armed Forces

Saturday 30 June 2018

A local celebration to show appreciation of the work of the Armed Forces will be held in St. Helier’s Royal Square today between 10:00 and 15:00, featuring static displays, a cadet drill competition and the Island Band.

The local event is part of Armed Forces Day, an annual national campaign that gives everyone the opportunity to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces past and present, including currently serving troops, service families, reservists, veterans and cadets.

Similar events are taking place across the UK, enabling people to come out and show their support.

Leighton Jenkins, event organiser, says: “We hope as many members of the public as possible will show their support for current and former members of the Armed Forces by joining us at the Royal Square today between 10:00 and 15:00.

"Armed Forces Day is a National event aimed at giving the public at large an opportunity to show their support for the Armed Forces community. We look forward to seeing you. ”

Military capability stands from the Jersey Field Squadron and 101 (EOD) Squadron Royal Engineers will be set up on the Square. The Cadets Units will take part in a drill competition while the Band of the Island of Jersey will be playing from 14:20. Refreshments and food will also be available, served by the team of Beresford Street Kitchen.

The local celebrations kicked on Monday with a Flag Raising Ceremony at the Cenotaph in St. Helier. On Wednesday, Reservists and Cadets wore their uniforms to work and school as part of Reserves Day.

The UK Armed Forces defend the country and its interests. Every day of the year they are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers and providing security and fighting terrorism.
