Bucket and spade sounds! Hundreds of kids make music by the sea

Thursday 06 July 2023

More than 250 schoolchildren and 45 local musicians came together yesterday to take part in a seaside concert and a number of workshops – including one involving making beats with a bucket and spade.

Despite the teachers' strike, students from 15 of the island's schools took part in a workshop and a joint performance which took place on the steps looking out to Elizabeth Castle.

Workshop leaders Janet Fulton, Alexander L’Estrange and Andrea Vogler encouraged the young participants to explore their creativity by composing percussion pieces using bucket and spades.

The students also learnt a new piece composed in conjunction with children at schools including Springfield and Grainville

Audiences were also treated to performances from individual schools in a variety of genres and styles which took place in the huts along Victoria Avenue.

A local teacher said: "The sight of one little boy placing his hand on his heart and literally singing his soul out will keep me going for weeks.”

After the children finished, older artists took over the stage with singer-songwriters, bands, choirs, poets, opera singers, Brazillian Capoeira dancers and DJs providing vibrant melodies and electrifying performances until sunset.

Audience participation saw people dancing to Wici’s south American tunes at Hut 2, and singing along to Elton John covers played by Rich Allo and Paul Bentley at the Look Out café.

The Jersey Chamber Orchestra Quartet and Bella Voce also brought a classical note to the event, which also featured the winning poets from the Jersey Festival of Words writing competition last year.

"This year we want to thank those parents who came down with their children to enable them to take part with many schools being closedAnd the schools who managed to attend including the Jersey Academy of Music

"It was the show of a lifetime for the boys and girls taking part that they will remember foreverWe also want to thank the many musicians and volunteers who gave so much to make this a special day for so many and to raise money for educational workshops in schools.

"Like all, I was blown away by the sheer depth and stunning talent performing. What a musical island we live in.
