Jersey's fisher-turned-cover star

Islander Gabby Mason may be the "first mate" of Jade-S Fisheries most days - but she also recently made it onto the cover of a popular women's magazine.

Gabby, who together with her partner Leyton Hunnisett runs Jade-S Fisheries, appeared on the cover of Woman's Weekly last week – and is also flying the flag for island fish in a cookbook, 'For the Love of the Sea II' by Jenny Jefferies.

Jenny "stumbled upon" the pair on Instagram, Gabby said, and things went from there – with Jade-S Fisheries being included both in the book and the Woman's Weekly feature.

In 'For the Love of the Sea II', author Jenny Jefferies curates stories and recipes from coasts across the British Isles, taking recipes from each featured business.

Gabby's recipe, pan-fried silver mullet with Jersey royals, was the simplest thing she could think of - and showcases a local fish - though she admits to changing the fish's name from "grey" to "silver".

In the end, Gabby found herself on the front page of the magazine.

And to make things sweeter, Gabby shared the cover with Miriam Margolyes.

"I'm such a fan as well," she said, adding that Miriam's bubbly, positive personality was "inspirational".

Gabby added that she was "battling" to get people to support the local fishing industry - but that people will need to change their shopping and cooking habits, adding that it was "really fundamental" to show the general public what the fishing community does.

The fishing community in Jersey is seeing numbers dwindle, but is still important culturally and socially to the island, Gabby said.
