The Jersey Employment Trust (JET) are encouraging us to reuse more of our stuff instead of recycling so much of it.
They've teamed up with the Department for Infrastructure ahead of the new Household Reuse and Recycling Centre opening at La Collette in January.
JET has been awarded the contract to manage the facility that's been designed to encourage us to reuse first and only recycle goods that have reached the end of their useful life.
To make it easy to donate items for reuse, customers will be able to drop off items in reusable condition to the Acorn Reuse Centre which will be managed by JET. JET will then transfer the items to their Trinity depot where they will be processed and go on sale.
DfI Minister Eddie Noel said: "We are thrilled to be working with JET as our Reuse Partner. We are working to reduce waste. It is important that we promote reuse as a waste management tool. We receive so many things in good condition at our recycling centre that could in fact be reused by someone else and this is a waste. Our partnership with JET will help us to reduce the Island’s environmental impact and achieve financial efficiencies as well as a wider community benefit."
JET's Executive Officer Jocelyn Butterworth said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with the DfI on this exciting new initiative. Whilst contributing to Jersey’s waste management strategy, JET will create a new retail outlet at its Acorn Enterprises premises in Trinity. This will create employment and training opportunities for clients with disabilities and long term health conditions. Furthermore, JET aims to work closely with partner charities to maximise social benefits in the wider community which the Reuse function can bring.
"This is a thrilling opportunity for JET to further develop its services and employment opportunities to its clients. Over time, we aim to create more than 20 jobs for people with disabilities and long term health conditions."
Until the new Household Reuse and Recycling Centre opens at La Collette in January 2017, the existing Household Recycling Centre at Gate 4 Bellozanne will remain open.
