A sixties model’s jewellery has been auctioned off for almost £100,000 - money Durrell says will go a long way towards saving species from extinction.
It was Uta Pearson’s final wish that her assets be liquidated with the proceeds going to the conservation charity that she had been helping to support since the 1970’s.
The auction at Bonhams in Sydney raised far more than the trust had hoped for and it’s great timing as conservationists fight to save the 40% of amphibian species now facing extinction.
Durrell’s Rachel Shaw said: “We are poised to launch the most all-embracing conservation mission in our 51 year history – a global effort to save amphibians.
“Ms. Pearson’s gift will be used exactly as she wished, to save endangered animals around the world.
“We are so grateful to Uta Pearson for her support over the years – we are nothing without the support of people like her and the many many others who give whatever they can to help.”
The German-born model died in Adelaide earlier this year at the age of 74.
Her love of wildlife and animals could be seen throughout the 85-piece collection that included antique diamond butterfly brooches and spiders, snake bracelets, Art Nouveau diamond encrusted bats and coloured diamond animals made into rings.
