JOA pledges continued support to Nepalese villages

Tuesday 03 October 2023

Projects to deliver water, sanitation and education centres to Nepalese villages will go ahead thanks to continued funding from Jersey Overseas Aid.

Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey, which has been supported by JOA since 2016, have so far funded and completed 16 village water, sanitation and hygiene projects across rural Nepal, as well as building five schools and three community centres.

Eight further village water and sanitation projects, and another new school, are planned for 2023 to 2024.

In addition, five JOA volunteering project teams have recently been set up in Nepal to build or rebuild essential infrastructure in rural communities. A further trip is set to take place next month.

JOA announced their continued support in the same week that the Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey is hosting its annual 'Bhat' Supper which celebrates its work and that of its sister charity, the Gurkha Welfare Trust UK.

International Development Minister Carolyn Labey, who is also chair of the JOA Commission, said: "The Gurkhas remain a unique and much-loved regiment of the British Army and indeed the wider community – we ourselves have a number of resident ex-Gurkha veterans and I am delighted that Jersey Overseas Aid's partnership with the Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey continues to go from strength to strength."

The Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey was established in late 2014 to mark the 200th anniversary of Gurkha soldiers serving in the British Army.

The local organisation is a partner of the Gurkha Welfare Trust, a UK charity which was established in 1969 to support veterans.

Lieutenant Colonel John Pinel, Chair of the Trust in Jersey, thanked the JOA and islanders from "their amazing and unwavering support which has had a hugely positive impact on the communities we work in".

The charity announced earlier this year that it had raised more than £1m since its launch nearly a decade ago.
