JOA celebrates record number of volunteer applications

Sunday 12 November 2023

After seeing a record number of applicants to their volunteering projects in 2023, Jersey Overseas Aid has increased the number of projects from three to four next year.

Next year's volunteers will have the opportunity to help build a secondary school in Nepal, teach in Rwandan schools, build a sand dam in Kenya, and improve the living conditions of a Malawian informal settlement.

Minister for International Development, Carolyn Labey said: "We are delighted to have been able to announce a full 2024 programme of overseas volunteering opportunities to Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda and Nepal – and due to high demand, we have increased the number of projects from three in 2023 to four.

"We are incredibly proud of our volunteering programme and were thrilled that last year so many islanders showed an interest in international development and were willing to give their time and their skills to benefit others."

Projects are selected on the basis of their impact on the local community and the equal partnership offered, allowing islanders to make sustainable improvements.
