Joe Biden wins by a landslide... at JCG

Wednesday 04 November 2020

The US presidential elections may be in dispute like never before, but over in Jersey, Joe Biden has won by a landslide.

The result of JCG’s mock American election saw the Democrat candidate sweep the polls with 227 votes and Republican Donald Trump managing to get the votes of 16 students.

The election came after some “impassioned speeches” from JCG Politics discussion group members, Martha and Sydney - though, to keep in line with physical distancing, all voting was done online.

'Mr Biden’s’ winning speech made points of protecting the Affordable Health Care Act Law, rejoining the Paris climate accords, addressing systemic racism and calling for gun control.

Reflecting on the experience, Eleanor, Chair of JCG's Election Committee, commented: “The process of carrying out an election is fascinating, especially when considering the differences between the UK, Jersey and American political systems.

"It was really interesting to see how JCG students voted.”

Carl Howarth, Principal at JCG, added: “At JCG we strongly encourage our students to debate matters important to them and to others. Our politics group regularly hold real life mirroring debates and elections to determine how they and their peers feel about global events. Our students are active citizens in their democracy.”
