Jury unanimously finds man guilty of 27 child sex abuse charges

Wednesday 28 June 2023

A man has been convicted of multiple child sex abuse charges following an eight-day Royal Court trial.

Paul Kelly denied eight counts of rape, 19 charges of sexually touching or encouraging a child to sexually touch him, and one charge of grave and criminal assault – but was unanimously found guilty by jurors after just over four hours’ deliberation.

The 56-year-old, who showed no emotion as the verdicts were announced, was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in court on Friday for a sentencing date to be set.

The Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, thanked the jury for their "care and thoroughness" during what had been a difficult case.

"This trial has been a substantial burden on you. It has not been an easy case to listen to and not an easy case to determine," he said.

Speaking after the trial, Detective Constable Caroline Foord said: "This victim has shown an incredible level of courage and strength to come forward to the police after having experienced such appalling and distressing abuse over many years.

"We are very grateful to the victim, who has co-operated with all the necessary lines of inquiry, to bring this matter before the courts.

"The States of Jersey Police continue to work with key partners and advocacy services such as the SARC at Dewberry House, JAAR and the Jersey Women’s Refuge, to encourage victims of sexual crime to report such incidents."

She added: "This case highlights the very challenging circumstances faced by many victims who have been subjected to sexual abuse.

"Although this was an historic event, the evidence was compelling and the victim was given reassurance that a thorough investigation would be conducted.

"We are committed to investigating and prosecuting all sexual offenders no matter how long ago the offences occurred, and we want to assure victims that there are a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance through all stages of the criminal justice process."
