Owners are being warned not to move their fish about after a case of the Koi Herpes virus has been found in Jersey.
The virus causes disease in common carp including Koi and can kill the fish.
Fish infected with it may be lethargic and have sunken eyes and they may also have gill damage. Those that survive an outbreak can carry the infection and could spread it to others.
The virus does not affect humans or other fish species but at the moment there is no treatment available.
The States Vet Steven Sagar says Islanders shouldn't move fish from pond to pond unless it is essential and should make sure that nets or other equipment are adequately cleaned, disinfected and dried before their use elsewhere. He says ornamental fish or water from fish collections must not be released into natural waterways.
If you suspect your fish might have it, you should call Mr Sagar on 441600.
