La Motte Street to close for seven weeks

Wednesday 19 April 2023

La Motte Street is to close to traffic for the next seven weeks to allow improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

The road will shut from Monday next week, 24 April, although pedestrian access - including access to the Government’s Customer and Local Services and Revenue Jersey Departments - will be maintained.

Vehicles will continue to be able to drive in and out of Berkshire Court garage, and to the disabled parking bays on Hilary Street, while a signed diversion for through traffic will be in place.

The bus stop on La Motte Street will be suspended while the road is closed, so that the stop on Grenville Street will become the next nearest while the work is in progress.

A second phase of improvements, from the Hilary Street junction back towards Snow Hill, is currently being finalised, and will be implemented once the first phase is complete.

Infrastructure Minister Tom Binet said he was pleased that La Motte Street would be the first location to benefit from a series of planned public realm improvements for St. Helier.

"La Motte Street has suffered from unstructured parking and drop-off, causing problems for buses using the street and risks to pedestrians trying to cross the road between vehicles stopped in undesignated areas. A large part of the first phase of work will require the road to be closed to through traffic and I apologise to anyone who will be inconvenienced," he said.

The improvements in phase one – from Hilary Street to the junction with St. Saviour’s Road – will involve surface water drainage, street lighting, footway paving, and carriageway resurfacing.
