Layla May Arthur: My favourite piece of artwork this year...

Friday 25 December 2020

With her intricate eye for detail and the steadiest hand, Layla May Arthur is a master maker of tiny worlds.

She was born and raised in Jersey, but now lives in The Netherlands where she has been studying Fine Art at the Minerva Art Academy.

Despite still being young, Layla is an internationally exhibited artist in her main medium of paper cutting through which she attempts to invite her audience to become a part of her work when they step into the shadows of her installations.

Islanders may recognise Layla’s style from a previous work entitled 'Jersey, My Childhood Home', which explores the intricacies of each of the twelve Jersey parishes, outlining Layla’s personal connection with and memories of each one. She also recently put forward a design for the care memorial.

Layla’s favourite piece she has been working on this year is one which will become her final graduation piece.

She explains: “This year my main project has been to begin working on my graduation piece; as working with paper is a very slow process and I have big plans for my final graduation installation!

“This piece is one of many paper sculptures I have constructed, each showing different fairy tales and folklore and from all around the world. This piece shows a Japanese tale and is designed to look like a typical Japanese house. The paper is cut out, carved in areas to create texture and layered to create different tonal ranges when the piece is internally lit up.”
