We don’t know yet whether the leaked plans that Deputy Geoff Southern has produced are authentic – but they seem to hit some of the areas that ministers have been hinting at for the last few months.
The Council of Ministers are due to reveal their plans to tackle the £145 million deficit that’s expected to open up in States’ finances over the next four years by the end of this month.
But the Deputy says that he’s seen the details, and has passed them on to the media.
The plans he’s distributed show 18 separate initiatives that would collectively cut 412 posts and save £143.8 million.
The document shows:
Health and Social Services department - £55 million worth of cuts, 150 lost posts
Community services - £9 million (90 posts)
Environmental charges - £2 million
Patient travel/transport - £1.8 million (two posts)
Hospital charges - £1.2 million
Department for Infrastructure - £30 million worth of cuts, 103 lost posts
Municipal services - £12 million (58 posts)
Waste services - £6 million (19 posts)
Highway services - £1.2 million (six posts)
Restrict concessionary bus fares - £200,000
Education department - £25 million worth of cuts, 40 lost posts
Freezing University maintenance grants - £2 million
Reduce salaries for newly-qualified teachers - £1 million
Outsource school cleaning - £800,000 (24 posts)
Reduce funding for on-Island university courses - £400,000
Stop/reduce grants to Jersey Childcare Trust and Brook - £200,000
Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture - £10.5 million, eight lost posts
Chief Minister’s department - £8.8 million worth of cuts, 36 lost posts
Cuts to State’s Statistics Unit – two posts
Community and Constitutional Affairs - £6.3 million, 33 lost posts
Treasury and Resources department - £4.4 million, 29 lost posts
Close the customer help desk - £120,000 (one post)
Environment department - £3.5 million worth of cuts, 13 lost posts
Reduce energy grants - £1.2 million (one post)
