Gardening project helps friendships bloom

Sunday 05 January 2020

A local charity supporting children and adults with a learning disabilities is celebrating the many friendships that have bloomed though its gardening project.

Jersey Mencap, whose 60th anniversary is approaching, runs a number of projects for islanders living with a learning disability including social clubs, art classes and the gardening project.

As 2019 drew to an end, the charity wrote about their biggest successes as well as their wishes for 2020...

"2019 for Jersey Mencap has once again proven to be a busy and fun year. Our Social Club continues to grow through offering a wide range of activities for adults with a learning disability.

We were proud to host the first Learning Disability Music Gig in the Summer and welcomed a band from Brighton, Beat Express. The musicians were a great showcase of what you can achieve regardless of your ability or disability.

Jersey Mencap run a year-round calendar of activities which include films, yoga, party nights and boat trips – you can see more of our achievements on our social media pages.

We are passionate about people with a learning disability deserving a full and inclusive social life and we see so many benefits of this. We would like to thank all our members who make the club such fun – with activities fully subscribed, we know the club is much needed and valued.

'Taking Part Making Art' was invited to host a public art exhibition at Jersey Museum in the summer. What a great way to celebrate our artist’s achievements and to have the art project recognised and valued within Jersey!

We thank all our supporters and donors who know the importance of our members having meaningful activities and structure to the week as well as the opportunity to be part of a vibrant, fun and buzzing art project.

The Jersey Mencap Gardening team have had a great year with a variety of crops, sown, nurtured and harvested at our allotment. New friendships have been formed and we’ve shared our growing successes along the way.

Being outside, learning about horticulture and reaping the benefits of ‘home-grown’ veg has seen this project go from strength to strength.

Our fundraising allows many of the Jersey Mencap activities to be free or greatly subsidised. This gets more challenging with every year that passes.

Please support Jersey Mencap fundraising events in 2020:

  • Jersey Mencap Charity Golf Day – Friday 15 May
  • The South Coast Charity Challenge, 15 mile charity walk - Sunday 17 May

Our wishes for 2020 are for people with a Learning Disability to have a full, rewarding and happy year with more opportunities.

As a charity we look forward to 2020 which will be Jersey Mencap’s 60th Anniversary which we will be marking in a number of ways."
