Tonight is nomination night for senators – Jersey’s ‘senior politicians’ – and with so many not seeking re-election there has to be at least five ‘new’ faces on the benches.
There are eight seats up for grabs, but some of the island’s longest-serving politicians are calling it day. They include Paul Routier, External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache, Health Minister Andrew Green, Treasury and Resources Minister Alan Maclean, and Philip Ozouf.
Only three sitting senators have said they’ll be seeking re-election: Chief Minister Senator Ian Gorst; Economic Development Minister Senator Lyndon Farnham – who says if he’s re-elected he’ll challenge Senator Gorst for the top job; and Senator Sarah Ferguson.
Six sitting States members – one constable and five deputies – have also said they’ll be putting their names forward: St Brelade Constable Steve Pallett; St Peter Deputy Kristina Moore; St Lawrence Deputy John Le Fondre; St Clement Deputy Simon Bree; St John Deputy Tracey Vallois; and the only candidate linked to a political party, Reform chairman, St Helier Deputy Sam Mezec.
Six candidates hoping to break into the States have also put their names forward: Anthony Lewis; Frank Luce; Phil Maguire, Stevie Ocean; Gino Risoli; and Moz Scott.
So, that makes 15 candidates for eight available seats, but unexpected candidates could declare tonight. The nomination meeting is at the Town Hall at 19:00.
Tomorrow is nomination night for constables and deputies.
Election day is Wednesday 16 May.
