Jersey Post say it’s their most difficult year yet and are putting up the price of stamps this month to help cover costs.
The company says Royal Mail increases, the big hike in the cost of airmail and the fact that posties are delivering to more addresses on the Island than ever before are all to blame.
Jersey Post’s Chief Executive Tim Brown said: ‘Our customers have highlighted that keeping the cost of the postal service low is a real priority.
“As an organisation we are facing the most difficult year yet in terms of external costs so we have tried to ensure that any price changes in 2016 are reflected in those services where some of the additional costs are being directly incurred.’
Fewer of us are writing letters these days and for those of us who still do, it’s going to be more expensive from 21 April.
It will cost you an extra penny, up to 48p, to stick a stamp on a local letter and 3p more, up to 60p, to send your letter to one of the other Channel Islands, the UK or the Isle of Man, if it weighs less than 100g.
A standard letter to Europe will cost you 66p, up 2p and anywhere else in the world will cost you 79p, that's an extra 3p.
Mr Brown said: “We passionately believe that the services provided by Jersey Post represent great value for money, and that these new prices should have a minimal impact on most Islanders; the average household spends just £1 per week on postal services.
“In addition, we will continue to look at ways that we can support the community, for example, offering discounts on key stamp prices at Christmas, which this year, will be extended to run for three weeks rather than the normal two week duration.”
