Letterbox firework delivers bonfire night fright to family

Tuesday 06 November 2018

A lit firework that was posted through the letterbox of a family living in St. Brelade could have caused “serious” damage, Police have warned.

A couple who were at home with their young son on bonfire night had a dangerous delivery posted through their letterbox when a lit firework was thrown into their hallway.

The firework was alight when it was thrown into the property at Le Clos des Sables in St. Brelade at around 21:00 yesterday evening and caused damage to the door and the carpet inside the house.

No one was injured, but the Police have warned that this “could have ended up very differently” in a social media post appealing for information on the incident.

A Police spokesperson told Express that the family were alerted to the firework by the smoke alarm going off in the hallway, but they emphasised how “serious it could have been” had the alarm not gone off, or if the family had been asleep when it happened. The spokesperson said: “It was a very dangerous thing to do”.

The owner of the house informed Police about the incident soon after it happened, but the Fire Service weren’t required to attend.

This news comes amid questions over whether fireworks should be regulated or limited to licensed professionals rather than being readily available to all members of the public.

The Police are now investigating the matter and have appealed to islanders who have any more information on the incident to call 01534 612612.
