Lieutenant-Governor gets hands dirty to launch new tree fund

Monday 18 December 2023

The Lieutenant-Governor will be getting his hands dirty tomorrow by planting a ceremonial tree to mark the launch of a new fund to combat the "devastating" impact of Storm Ciarán.

Alongside St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft, he will be planting a sweet gum at Parade Gardens, starting the effort to rebuild the island's woodlands, parks and more.

The sweet gum, or Liquidambar styraciflua, a tree native to North America known for its colourful foliage - particularly in autumn.

The tree will replace a beech planted in 2008 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Its planting will mark the launch of the Jersey Tree Fund, which was set up to help the island restore its trees, hedgerows and woodlands.

The fund is still looking for support, and Jersey Trees For Life's CEO, Alex Morel, has called for any potential corporate sponsors to get in touch.

He said: "Storm Ciaran had a devastating impact on our trees, hedgerows and woodlands, people quite rightly want to see these replaced as quickly as possible and so we wanted to create a fund which will be elusively used for this purpose.”

"We are grateful to the Lieutenant Governor for initiating the replanting of our public spaces with this beautiful tree, gifted to the people who work and live in St Helier."

"The Jersey Tree Fund is looking for corporate sponsorship to help promote the project and contribute to the restoration and careful management of our trees, hedgerows and woodlands”.

The ceremonial planting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 19 December at 2.30pm in Parade Gardens.
