Lifeguards back on duty from tomorrow

Friday 29 April 2016

RNLI lifeguards will be back at their daily posts from tomorrow as the summer season gets underway.

Qualified lifeguards have been meeting primary schoolchildren over the last few weeks to give them a few lessons in how to stay safe over the summer, but tomorrow sees them start up their 10 am to 6 pm patrols at St Ouen, with patrols at Plemont, Greve de Lecq and St Brelade’s beginning on 21 May.

Rob Stuteley, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, said: “Our lifeguard teams are looking forward to getting back on the beaches for our sixth season in Jersey.

“Whether you are local to Jersey, or visiting on holiday, we’d urge beachgoers to head to an RNLI lifeguarded beach and to swim in the supervised area between the red and yellow flags.

“If you are planning on getting in the water, it’s worth remembering that the sea temperature is still cold so it’s important people wear a suitable wetsuit. Try and stay within your depth and follow the lifeguard’s advice. If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help. If you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard, or if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

“It is also very important to check the tide times before setting out and always carry a means of calling for help in case you should get caught out.”

The RNLI took over the lifeguard service in 2011, and have been working with the Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture department.
