Local cancer survivor to run London Marathon in memory of sister

A local cancer survivor will soon be donning her trainers and lycra to run in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey at this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 22 April, on the day of her sister's birthday, who sadly passed away in May 2015.

Liz Smith, an Examinations Officer at Victoria College, was diagnosed in March 2017 with stage 2 breast cancer and underwent a single mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Spending three weeks in Southampton having radiotherapy gave her plenty of time to decide what challenge she could undertake, so decided to start running again.

She said: “My sister was also diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away in March 2015, after a long and courageous fight. I don’t know how she would have coped without the support of Macmillan, especially in the last few weeks of her life. The London Marathon falls on what would have been her birthday so I am doing this for the both of us."

Michelle Parker, Macmillan Jersey’s Fundraising and Events Coordinator said : “This is the first year we’ve applied for charity places at the London Marathon, so we were thrilled to be given the news that there would be one place for Macmillan Jersey. When we heard Liz’s story and the challenges she has overcome in her personal life, we knew that 26.2 miles of running would be a walk in the park for her!”

Ms Smith has already raised over £1200 of her £2000 target. If you would like to contribute to her fundraising efforts, visit her page.
