Local heart team recognised as blackout ‘pioneers’

Jersey has been recognised as an 'international centre of excellence' in cardio care thanks to the hospital Heart team's pioneering work with patients who suffer blackouts.

The Syncope Trust and Reflex Anoxic Seizures (STARS) - an organisation which showcases the best practices in syncope and heart rhythm care – has selected the Jersey Heart Team as a 'Syncope Pioneer'.

The multi-disciplinary team has been recognised for introducing a dedicated Nurse-led Transient Loss of Consciousness Clinic (TLoC) and the development of a Clinical Physiologist delivered device implantation service, which have led to a more efficient use of resources, early patient discharge as well as an improved and shortened patient journey to diagnosis and treatment.

Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist Kelly Anne Kinsella said she was "delighted" the team had been accepted as one of the finalists to be included in the Syncope Pioneers report, and that, along with the Hospital, they would be recognised internationally as a centre of excellence.

As part of the recognition, the local team will be featured alongside a handful of other centres.

“I am extremely pleased that this hard-working team has been recognised nationally for their efforts,” Health Minister Deputy Richard Renouf said.

“I am immensely proud of the team, and I want to thank them for all the hard work they do in caring for islanders.”
