New radio station aims to put islanders in 'contact' with classics

Wednesday 05 September 2018

Former island radio station Contact 94 has readjusted its dials, changed frequencies and re-emerged as a new internet station - 30 years to the second that it originally went live.

The new station, Contact Classic Hits, is a spin-off from the old Contact 94, having rejuvenated itself with a modern feel.

94 was first broadcast on 5 September 1988 and the official air date for Contact Classic Hits is exactly 30 years on from that date: 5 September 2018 at 07:00.

Previous owner of Contact 94 and co-director of the new Contact Classic Hits, Stephen Clipp is excited to get the ball rolling by incorporating new fresh faces while roping in a few of the originals to help turn back the clock.

“Former presenter Kevin Turner will be kicking off the very first show with a short speech followed by the two songs which started off the original Contact 94 journey - those being 'Good Day Sunshine' by The Beatles and 'Groovy Kind of Love' by Phil Collins," he told Express.

Stephen said that much of the music style will be similar to the 80s hits they used to play, but in order to keep up with changes in trends, they will include music they would have potentially been playing now had the original station not closed down in 1991.

Programme Director Stephen Ryan said: “We aim to bring our listeners exactly what they want to hear, with that magic formula of less talk and adverts and more of their favourite classic songs.”
