Jersey netball star Serena Guthrie was last night crowned Sports Personality of the Year in a glittering ceremony celebrating sporting prowess across the Channel Islands.
The Commonwealth Games gold medallist gained the accolade following votes from thousands of islanders.
Also nominated were Guernsey’s international bowling sensations Lucy Beere and Alison Merrien, ex-Jersey Reds rugby player Michael ‘Booj’ Le Bourgeois, and tenacious Guernsey boxer Bradley Watson.
A cheer went up as Serena’s family, who were present at the awards ceremony on her behalf, learned of her victory.

Another big winner for Jersey was ‘PraxisIFM Rising Star’ Will Masterman, whose surfing skills have wowed crowds on the international stage.
Will said he was “stoked” to receive the award, which acknowledged his spot as number one surfer in the UK in his age group, and him being highest placed in his team in the ISA Junior World Championships for England at 13th.

His dad, who collected the award on Will’s behalf as he looked on from abroad via a video link, said that he was “really really proud” of his son and that he was “choked up” about the honour, later calling for surfing to be nurtured as a talent in the island.
The Judges Award for Sporting Achievement went to the youngsters of Victoria College Prep’s football team, who have enjoyed two years of national cup-winning success in a competition involving over 3,000 schools under coach Ben Silva.

He joked that they might have “hated” him for the pre-school training sessions, but hoped that they now could see the benefit. He added that it was a “privilege” to have worked with the team.
Mr Silva was himself in the runnings for an award: Coach of the Year. This, however, was taken by Nathan Jegou, who earned his stripes in developing swimmers at the Tigers Swimming Club. Last year, he became the first Jersey swimmer to reach a Commonwealth Games final.
