Local helping hands sought to deliver global humanitarian aid

Sunday 04 November 2018

From building washrooms in Tanzania to providing summer camps for those with physical and mental disabilities in Lebanon, local helping hands are being called upon to make a difference abroad.

There's just one more day to sign up to become a volunteer with Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) and get involved in different community projects in Africa and the Middle East next year.

JOA, which is a States-funded body that has been delivering humanitarian aid around the world for nearly half a century, has lined up three different community works projects for prospective islanders to get involved with in Kenya, Tanzania and Lebanon.

The Tanzanian project will provide the opportunity for volunteers to teach in a primary school as well as building latrines and washrooms to ensure all pupils have access to clean water and sanitation.

In Kenya, volunteers will be working with a community-based Self-Help Group to build a sand dam – a project which takes place next September.

Finally, the Lebanon community project involves providing one-on-one care during summer camps for those with physical and mental disabilities.

Minister for International Development and Chair of JOA Deputy Carolyn Labey said: “JOA’s community work projects have been a core component of our work for nearly half a century and every year I am always delighted by the response and enthusiasm shown by islanders. These projects can be life-changing and are often as valuable for the volunteers as for those they are helping.”

Applicants must be over 18 years old and physically fit and well. Volunteers will be expected to participate in several team-building events before embarking on the projects. Each project costs £500.

The deadline for applications is Monday 5 November (tomorrow) and candidates will be interviewed on 10 November.
