An online fundraiser has collected almost £6,000 to support the family of an African accountant who died suddenly a few months after moving to Jersey with his family.

Friends and work colleagues have rallied round to support the family of Henry Chikwena (44), who was found dead by his wife Rachel on 4 November this year.

During the opening of an inquest into his death this morning, it was stated that Mr Chikwena had been born in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, worked as an accountant and had moved to Jersey with his wife and children in summer 2023.

Vincent Nyawai, who set up the fundraising page, paid tribute to his brother-in-law following his "unexpected" death.

He said: "Henry was not just a great guy, he was a pillar of strength for his family and a source of inspiration to many.

"His work ethic, kindness, and infectious smile left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

"Henry had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who cherished his friendship, and he always extended a helping hand to those in need."

Mr Nyawei said donations would help alleviate the family's "immediate financial burdens, allowing them to focus on healing and remembering the remarkable person Henry was".

To date, the fundraiser has yielded £5,738 from 127 donations.

Coroner's Officer Kate Falle told the inquest at Morier House that the Police were not treating Mr Chikwena's death as suspicious, and that there was no objection to the release of his body.

Relief Coroner Advocate Cyril Whelan authorised the release of Mr Chikwena's body and adjourned the inquest pending the results of further investigations. Although no family members were present, he expressed his condolences.
