‘Climb a mountain' for end-of-life care patients

Sunday 03 January 2021

Islanders looking for their first challenge of the year are being called on to climb Everest or Kilimanjaro - without leaving the island - to help people receiving end-of-life care.

Jersey Hospice Care wants everyone to get 2021 off to an active start with their annual walking challenge, 'Every Step Counts'.

The month-long challenge starts now and offers participants a choice of four different distances to complete whenever and wherever they wish.

Participants are asked to ‘climb’ one or more of the distances before 31 January and to raise money through sponsorship, making every step count.

Raising just £30 could pay for an hour’s bereavement counselling and £130 for the medical supplies in the In-Patient Unit for one day.

The distances include the equivalent number of steps it would take to climb Mount Everest (58,070) and Mount Kilimanjaro (38,680) or to complete 20,200 steps, the amount it costs to run Hospice for one day (£20,200).

The steps can be completed by pacing a living room while watching TV, walking up the stairs, or heading out for a beach walk (with or without a dog!). Those taking part should track their steps and keep a record using the downloadable form on the event website.

Community and Events Co-ordinator Marina Brockbank, said: “Looking back on 2020 and the challenges we have all faced, we wanted to create an event that’s fun, meaningful and accessible to all Islanders, as well as able to generate funds for us to continue to provide our services for free to anyone who needs them in 2021. And what better time to get moving than in January?

"By signing up and knowing that every step and penny raised really does count towards helping our community receive outstanding care at the end of life, we hope that Islanders will feel motivated to get their steps in and be able to feel the physical and mental health benefits of getting active.”

Registration can be done online and it costs £10 to enter.

All participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £30 in sponsorship and will receive a medal for completing their challenge.

Facebook group has been launched to support those taking part and to share ideas of walks, pictures, and encouragement at home or out and about.
