A 39-year-old man who wounded another with a set of keys, and smeared faeces over the walls of a police cell has been sent to prison for 22 months.
Timothy James Ozanne also assaulted a police officer and was was in possession of Class C drugs during his arrest in Guernsey.
He was charged with four counts, initially pleading not guilty to three, but later changed his plea.
The incidents began on 6 August 2023 when Ozanne pulled up in a car to Guernsey's South Esplanade around 02:00 and got into an exchange of abuse and insults with a group of young adults walking towards town.
The altercation was captured on CCTV. Ozanne had a set of keys on a metal chain and swung it around.
When one of the males approached him, he swung the chain hitting them in the forehead.
Others attempted to restrain Ozanne, but he struggled free and again swung and hit the male with the keys. The wound required glueing and bandaging.
Police arrived and arrested Ozanne shortly after. A body search at the police station found him to be in possession of seven capsules of tramadol in his sock.
While in a cell, officers became concerned over an object Ozanne was holding and entered to remove it from him, bringing him to the ground.
At this point Ozanne struck his knee out into the thigh of one of the officers. Hours later he wiped his own faeces across the cell walls and wrote words on the back of the door.
In interview he said he had acted in self-defence when confronted by the group of males. The assault on police was due to feelings of being treated “like an animal”, and the dirty protest was out of boredom.

Advocate Sam Steel, defending, said Ozanne ventured out that night to find some peace and quiet, but a trigger word said to him by the males “caused him to lose control of his actions”.
He wished he had driven away.
Apologies were offered for his “disgraceful behaviour” at the police station, but Advocate Steel asked for him to be judged in the context of his significant mental health problems including severe anxiety and hyper vigilance.
A previous stay in custody had seen medication he depended on suddenly withdrawn just weeks before the incidents, something his GP described as “extremely dangerous”.
“He was not in his usual frame of mind,” Advocate Steel said.
Judge Gary Perry, sentencing, took full account of Ozanne’s background and circumstances but said he had an “appalling record”.
“Words are only words. They don’t wound and can never be an excuse for violence... you had multiple opportunities to leave, none of which you took.”
Using keys as a weapon was an aggravating feature, alongside the “equally appalling” behaviour towards police, he added.
Ozanne was sentenced to 22 months in prison for wounding, two months for the drugs, four months for the assault, and three months for the criminal damage, to run concurrently.
