British fashion and homeware retailer Matalan will be taking over the space occupied by George at Liberty Wharf, which is due to leave the island at the end of January.
The new store will be launching as a SandpiperCI franchise in March in both Jersey and Guernsey, where it will also replace George at its existing 5,200sqft shop in St. Martin's.
The closure of George stores in the Channel Islands is the result of owners ASDA deciding not to renew any of its franchise contracts worldwide, Sandpiper said, adding that no redundancies will result from the closures.
Matalan will be taking over a total of four units in Liberty Wharf, including Laura Ashley, which went into administration earlier this year.

Mike Rutter, Sandpiper’s Retail Managing Director said: “We’re extremely pleased to be making this announcement. Matalan is a well-known UK brand which has offered outstanding value and quality for more than 30 years. Matalan is synonymous with a wide-ranging choice of the highest quality clothing and homeware at great value prices which we’re certain will be well-received by our Channel Islands customers.
“The Matalan stores will be a positive and welcome arrival in the current difficult retail climate. The stores will occupy four units in Sandpiper’s Liberty Wharf ‘shop & dine’ retail complex and will replace George at its existing 5,200 sq ft shop in St Martin’s, Guernsey.”
