Meeting over roads

The Parish of St Helier is to take over roads and grass open areas on a First Tower estate so that they can be properly maintained.

A Parish Assembly is being hold tonight at the Town Hall to formally take over the land on Close Vaze, so that the parish can look after it, and so that they can police it properly for illegal parking.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said that taking over the land would give the parish the chance to make sure that the residents were effectively getting the services that they were paying for through their rates.

He said: “It will be an enormous relief to the dozens of St Helier residents on the new estate that the official transfer has at last been completed because it means that the parish is now able to ensure that the roads and green areas on the estate are properly maintained. People sometimes object to the parish taking on roads and green areas, but these people pay their rates and they have the right to the same kinds of services provided to the other parishioners.”

The parish has already budgeted for sweeping and cleaning the area, and they say that because the roads are new they are unlikely to need any maintenance or repair work for 20 years or so.

Anyone who pays rates in St Helier, anyone on the electoral roll, or a representative of a rate-paying company is entitled to speak at and vote at a Parish Assembly. Tonight’s meeting starts at 7 pm.
