Minimum wage to rise to £8.02 next week

Monday 23 September 2019

Minimum wage is to rise to £8.02 per hour next week, making this year's increase the highest in over a decade.

The increase, which comes into force on Tuesday 1 October, will mean an extra £1,082 per year for minimum wage employees working 40 hours per week.

The rise forms the second part of a two-step increase introduced by Jersey’s Social Security Minister last year

Following a recommendation by the Employment Forum, Deputy Judy Martin approved wage rises of 5% from 1 April.

Next week’s rise will bring the total increase to 6.9% - the highest annual percentage pay increase for employees over the age of 16 in more than 10 years.

“I am really pleased that the second stage of the pay rise is set to come in next month,” Deputy Martin said.

“This is the first time since the Employment Law came into force in 2005 that the minimum wage has increased twice in one year. This allowed a more significant overall increase in 2019 with a longer period of notice for businesses. It is important that employers ensure that their staff are paid the correct rate from 1 October.
