The new Les Quennevais School will be built on fields near the Airport, Education Minister Rod Bryans has confirmed.
The site was the favourite of a major consultation exercise undertaken this summer, and the department is now coming up with plans for the school – it’s estimated that it could cost up to £40 million.
The current school site is old and cramped – it was built in the sixties for an estimated school population of 450, but it now has 800 pupils.
Deputy Bryans’ decision means that Jersey Property Holdings – the department that deals with States property – will go ahead with a Planning application.
“A new Les Quennevais School is long overdue and the consultation showed strong public support for a new building in the west that will match the standard of our other secondary schools and provide the necessary education for our children,” said the Deputy.
“The consultation result in favour of Option 2 was very conclusive.
“People also expressed strong and clear views that the public sports fields and community facilities at Les Quennevais should be maintained at their current size because they bring significant value to the whole island in terms of health and community cohesion.”
