Missing man: What do we know so far?

Wednesday 22 February 2023

As the search continues for the 51-year-old who left his parents' house more than a week ago and hasn't been seen since, here's everything we know so far about what a senior detective has described as an "unusual" missing person case.

Acting Superintendent Craig Jackson provided an update on the search for Thomas Frost...

Who is Thomas Frost?

Mr Frost is a 51-year-old man, who is married with children and works in finance. He is described as being 5ft 10in tall, of medium build with greying hair.

It is believed that he was last seen wearing a crimson t-shirt, underneath a navy shirt with white buttons, and navy jeans.

He also may be wearing a light grey hoodie over his shirt. It is still thought that he didn't have shoes on him when he disappeared.

Acting Superintendent Craig Jackson yesterday revealed that Mr Frost had previously gone missing, although not recently, and in all instances for a much shorter period of time.

Acting Supt Jackson declined to reveal the possible reasons for Mr Frost’s disappearance but stressed that it was being treated as a missing-persons inquiry and that there was "no indication of any third-party involvement".

He added: "We are mainly focused on the area where Thomas was last seen. We are within the search radius of that home address. Until we have cleared those immediate areas we don’t want to speculate on what has actually caused Thomas to go missing."

Where and when was he last seen?

Mr Frost was last seen at his parents' address, situated on a lane above L'Etacq in St. Ouen, on Saturday 11 February around 22:00.

Acting Supt Jackson yesterday described how the islander had appeared "happy" while visiting his parents’ house – but disappeared shortly after they went to bed.

He explained: "He seemed happy with his parents. They left him and went to bed and then sometime between 22:00 and 01:00 they believed that he had gone missing. They had a quick search of the area and then they notified us of his disappearance.

"We got the call just prior to 02:00."

Who is involved in the search for him?

specialist team of around 30 detectives and search officers was initially put together to look for him.

So far, searches using planes, drones and lifeboats have been unable to locate Mr Frost.

Over the last week, various agencies have joined in the search for Mr Frost. Jersey Search and Rescue (JSAR), Jersey Fire and Rescue Service (JFRS), Channel Island Air Search, the Jersey Coastguard, CI Search and the Honorary Police have all been involved.

A Police Search Advisor (POLSA) from Guernsey has also been brought over to Jersey to assist SoJP’s own Police Search Advisor. The Guernsey POLSA will offer additional advice and guidance in relation to searching, to ensure that the searching taking place is correctly co-ordinated and remains effective.

Despite following up numerous lines of inquiry and receiving several reports of people matching Mr Frost’s description, there have been no confirmed sightings since he left his parents’ house.

Acting Supt Jackson said there were no current plans to stop or scale down the search, explaining: "While we have got active lines of inquiry the investigation will continue and we will constantly review the search area and we could make a decision to expand it, dependent on lines of inquiry, or reduce it once we are content that we have searched that area thoroughly."

What has been done in the search so far?

60 police officers and staff have been involved in the search. Detectives have so far identified a 750m search radius from Mr Frost's last known location and conducted house-to-house enquiries at every address in that area.

Intelligence has generated over 130 actions, with 19 still outstanding.

During road checks on Saturday night, 18 motorists who passed through the checks were spoken to by States Police officers whilst Honorary Officers conducted several checks nearby to speak to other passing motorists.

The road checks focused on Le Mont Huelin and Mont Pinel in St. Ouen "in the hope that someone who walks or drives this route regularly may know something they haven't realised is important." Police said they hoped their appearance "may jog someone's memory".

The Force's efforts have so far included searches of open land and shallow water, checks across the north- and south-west coastlines, house-to-house enquiriesuse of drones. They also confirmed a sniffer dog was being used.

Channel Islands Air Search has conducted an aerial sweep of the area Mr Frost was last seen, and Jersey Fire and Rescue Service's Inshore Lifeboat has been used to search the Val de la Mare reservoir. Acting Supt Jackson said yesterday that the body of water, plus others in the area, could be searched again, possibly with divers.

What can the public do?

Police are reiterating their appeal for any CCTV, dash-cam or doorbell footage that could be helpful to the investigation and continue to ask residents in the west of the island to check their outdoor areas, sheds, gardens, garages and to assist any neighbours that might not be able to check themselves.

Anyone who needs help to search these areas can contact the police, who will assist.

Mr Frost's sister, Cheryl MacDonald, has also publicly commented on Facebook that anyone who would like to help put up posters is welcome to message her.

Anyone with information should call police on 01534 612612, selecting option 2, then option 4.
