Monty Python star to perform in Jersey

Wednesday 26 June 2019

And now for something completely different… John Cleese is ‘hopeful’ of performing in Jersey after some confusion on Twitter about whether the August shows would go on at the Opera House.

IT’S… now been confirmed by the Monty Python star that he’s coming to Jersey after he had some difficulty getting in touch with the Opera House to set the dates in stone.

After tweeting a “plea for help” from islanders to find out why the Opera House director wasn’t “answering [his] emails or calls” regarding his summer shows in Jersey – a tweet which has since been deleted – the celebrated comedian has now said that he’ll be coming to Jersey in August.

Most famous for his role in the comedy troupe which made sketch show ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ and his portrayal of Basil Fawlty in ‘Fawlty Towers’ – which he co-wrote with his first wife Connie Booth in the 1970’s – Mr Cleese is now bringing his comedy prowess to Jersey.

It appears that the screenwriter could be performing with a co-star as his tweet said: “We’ve heard back and we hope to be performing in Jersey on the 7th and 15th August."

There has been speculation online that his co-star could be his daughter Camilla Cleese – a former model and professional horse rider turned comedian.

Many of the comedian’s followers were also confused as to the location of Jersey, with several users asking Mr Cleese if he’s performing in the American state of New Jersey. One such tweeter got a blunt response from the esteemed entertainer, stating simply: “No.”

To provide further clarification about his performance venue he added: “Jersey, where the pullovers come from.”

Although Mr Cleese says that he “hope[s]” to perform in Jersey on 7 and 15 August, the Opera House have not yet made any announcement to that effect – nor have the performances been published on their website.
