100 new covid cases identified in 24 hours

Wednesday 16 December 2020

100 new covid cases have been identified in the past 24 hours, with at least 10 people in hospital specifically receiving treatment for covid and around five receiving high-flow oxygen treatment.

Yesterday marked more than 2,000 islanders being diagnosed with the illness since the pandemic began.

According to the Government's latest statistical release, at present, 881 individuals are officially recorded as having the illness: 44 are in care homes, 32 in hospital and 805 in the community.

Ahead of the statistics being published, Government officials told Express that 10 of the 30 people in hospital at that time were there specifically for covid. Of those, they said that "fewer than five" individuals were receiving high-flow oxygen care. Officials have not yet responded to Express's request for updated figures.

Deputy Medical Officer for Health, Dr Ivan Muscat, told Express last week that the number of patients on high-flow oxygen in the hospital would have a bearing on when the Nightingale Ward would have to open. He said the hospital had capacity to help between 10 and 20 people in this way.

“There’ll come a point depending on how much oxygen usage there is that the Nightingale would have to open in order to cater for that number. The number of patients who will require that type of support won’t suddenly appear overnight," he explained.

"There’ll be a gradual increase to get to that number so there’ll be sufficient warning for us to know that the Nightingale is getting closer."

Of the 100 cases recorded in the past 24 hours - which marks the second highest single-day rise - two were identified through inbound travel, 28 through workforce screening, 24 through contact tracing, 30 while individuals were seeking healthcare, four through admissions screening, and 12 through cohort screening.

On Tuesday, the Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, said there could be two or three more cases for every single case identified on the island.

It means that there could now be up to 2,600 islanders with the virus in the community.

The Chief Minister will be holding a press conference this evening at 19:00 on the number of cases on the island, as well as providing an update on the vaccination programme.

He will be accompanied by the Health Minister, Dr Ivan Muscat, and Vaccination lead Becky Sherrington.
