New network launched to help mums

Monday 18 September 2017

A local entrepreneur has set up a new community for mothers in Jersey to have a bit of space for themselves.

‘Mum Space’ founder, Vicky O’Neil (pictured), herself a mother of two, hopes to create a welcoming network for mums to have some time away from their children to relax, be creative and meet new people.

Inspired by getting together with friends to try something a bit different over a glass of wine and some nibbles, Vicky will be holding her first official Mum Space event - a felt flower making workshop - later this week.

As well as giving women a chance to learn something new, Vicky hopes that Mum Space will also provide support for local mothers: “As wonderful as motherhood is, it can sometimes feel so isolating and a real struggle. When my first son was born, I’d gone from being a girl about London, commuting, wining and dining and being out a lot in the week, to suddenly feeling like a sad sack, stuck in the house with a body and life I suddenly didn’t recognise. I really struggled and felt so overwhelmed with my new identity. I loved my son so much but motherhood totally and utterly terrified me.”

Vicky said: “‘I’m hoping that the events, workshops and meet ups can help mums. Whether it’s having some time out to do something creative, attending a talk on how to set up a new business… or learning how to apply your make-up in 10 minutes and look ultra-glam - I’m hoping there is something that will appeal to everyone… because after all mums are bloody great!”

The first Mum Space event will be a felt flower making workshop on Wednesday at the Harbour Gallery with felting expert Cathryn Ward from Skaapie Handmade.
