Classical musical masterpieces performed for the young masses

Sunday 10 April 2016

School children are being taken on what promises to be a thrilling classical musical journey when they get to see Carmen's Bizet performed live at the Opera House next month.

Musicians from the Jersey Chamber Orchestra and special guests will be performing the BBC Ten Pieces project for 1,600 school children as part of the Liberation Festival Schools Education Programme.

The BBC Ten Pieces has been introducing children across the country to classical music and on 5 and 6 May children here will also get to hear Haydn's Trumpet Concerto, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries and Bernstein's Mambo from West Side Story.

The great masterpieces will be directed by Daniel Cohen, the ringmaster of the Deutsche Opera in Berlin, who is regarded as one of the most exciting young conductors in the world.

Liberation Festival Chairman James Mews said: “The musical outreach work that we are able to offer is a key component of Music in Action’s annual activities.  Last year we offered 62 outreach performances and reached approximately 6,000 members of the community we are hoping to exceed those opportunities this year.

“In addition to working with schools, we take our performances to hospitals and care homes.  We are delighted to be recognized as BBC Champions for the BBC Ten Pieces project and to be promoting the fantastic commitment and educational resources that the BBC is making to music education by featuring their project within the Festival programme of events.

Concert-goers are in for a show-stopping treat on Sunday 8 May when a super-sized Jersey Chamber Orchestra fills the theatre. They'll get to hear Carmen's Suite No 1, Saint-Saëns magnificent violin concerto performed by Russian superstar Boris Brovtsyn, who is one of the greatest young violinists in the world, and Beethoven’s great revolutionary symphony Eroica.

Festival Director Caroline Buchanan said: “We received such positive feedback from 2015 we are delighted to be able to repeat this initiative. Feedback from last year ranged from; ‘The children enjoyed learning about the different instruments as well as hearing them perform togethe’.   ‘Excellent – really enjoyable. More opportunities for similar events would be great! Children (& staff) thoroughly enjoyed the event. Thank you!’ It’s so special to be able to help our young talents discover and learn in a manner that can help them on their journey through life.”

Tickets start at £10 for adults and £5 for children and you can book them here www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk or call the Opera House on 511115.

There’s a pre-concert talk with violinist Boris Brovtsyn at 7 pm.
